AI Evaluation Engineer Pay in 2026: Advertised Bands vs. Author-Sampled Ranges

If you are weighing a move into AI evaluation engineering, you will find two pay figures that do not agree. One is a tally of advertised salary bands, with a median of $220,000 to $330,000 across 558 postings (AI Evals Salaries 2026). The other is one author’s sample of 43 postings, with ranges from $95,000 to $230,000 (HireVane). This guide relies on published postings, salary aggregators and vendor data. It explains what each figure measures, why they diverge, and how to use them. Neither figure tells you what eval engineers are actually paid.
What an AI Evaluation Engineer Does (and Why the Title Is a Problem)
The sources describe the role mostly through its skills: Python, statistical reasoning, prompt engineering basics and evaluation frameworks such as Ragas, DeepEval, Promptfoo and LangSmith (HireVane). The harder problem is the title. HireVane says the role has no standardized leveling yet. It gives two examples: a Series B posting at $140K titled “Senior,” and a FAANG-adjacent role at $210K that asked for less experience (HireVane). A “senior” label therefore tells you little about the band. Compare postings by scope, seniority signals and location, not by title alone.
The Advertised-Band View: What Postings Publish
On 2026-10-22, the AI Evals Salaries board counted 1,129 live roles across 173 employers (AI Evals Salaries 2026). Of those, 664 state pay in some form and 465 state nothing. The site kept 558 listings that give an annual USD base band. It excluded 79 hourly or daily listings, 16 non-USD listings, 10 on-target-earnings listings that include commission or bonus, and one listing outside its plausible range (AI Evals Salaries 2026).
Across those 558, the median advertised band runs from $220,000 minimum to $330,000 maximum (AI Evals Salaries 2026). That is the median of two endpoints per listing. It describes what employers advertised, not what anyone was paid.
Advertised Bands by Discipline
The same site splits the 558 listings by discipline, using median advertised endpoints:
- Alignment & interpretability: $252,000–$400,000 (42 listings) (AI Evals Salaries 2026)
- Post-training & RL: $230,500–$392,200 (140 listings) (AI Evals Salaries 2026)
- Red team & safeguards: $266,000–$350,000 (78 listings) (AI Evals Salaries 2026)
- Evals & benchmarks: $213,000–$310,000 (232 listings) (AI Evals Salaries 2026)
- Eval tooling: $177,500–$240,000 (14 listings) (AI Evals Salaries 2026)
- Human data: $150,000–$239,000 (52 listings) (AI Evals Salaries 2026)
The site warns that these cohorts differ in employer, location and seniority, so they are not a controlled comparison. Its own caveat is that employers who publish bands skew toward better pay, which makes the figures an “optimistic read rather than a market average” (AI Evals Salaries 2026). Use the discipline split to see where advertised pay runs higher. Do not use it to set one number for eval engineers.
The Author-Sample View: What One Reviewer Found
HireVane’s author reviewed 43 postings from LinkedIn, Wellfound and company career pages in May 2026, and reported remote USD ranges by experience level (HireVane). Junior roles (0–2 years) run $95,000–$130,000. Mid-level roles (2–5 years) run $135,000–$180,000. Senior roles (5+ years) run $175,000–$230,000 (HireVane). The guide gives no sampling method. These are sample ranges, not surveyed pay.
The guide also cites a single fintech example: an eval engineer earning $175K fully remote. That anecdote is unverified, so treat it as one data point, not a benchmark (HireVane).
A related HireVane snapshot of AI red-team roles from May 2026 gives US ranges of $60,000–$90,000 for entry level, $110,000–$160,000 for mid level and $160,000–$280,000 for senior and lead roles (HireVane). Those are adjacent roles, and they do not feed the figures in this guide.

Why the Two Numbers Disagree
The two views measure different things, for three reasons.
Sample size. The advertised median rests on 558 bands. The author’s ranges rest on 43 postings (AI Evals Salaries 2026; HireVane). A larger sample is more stable, but stability is not the same as representativeness.
Selection. Every figure in the advertised-band view comes from postings that state a band. The site itself notes that publishing employers skew toward better pay (AI Evals Salaries 2026). The HireVane sample depends on one author’s choices, with no disclosed method (HireVane).
Leveling. Because titles are not standard, the same label can sit on different pay bands in different samples. That blurs any comparison by level (HireVane).
A third view points the same way. The AI Dev Board reports a median of $220,000 across 3,829 AI engineering listings with published salary, but “evals” is not a tag on that board (AI Dev Board). Its mid-level average ($155,000) sits below its junior average ($172,000) (AI Dev Board). Its company ranking shows the same skew: Anthropic’s average advertised salary is $382,000 across 326 listings with salary, and the board’s overall average is $234,000 (AI Dev Board, top-paying companies).
Neither the advertised bands nor the author sample is a survey of what eval engineers are paid. No primary survey of actual pay exists in these sources. The gap reflects differences in selection and sample, not one number being correct and the other wrong.
Equity, Bonuses and the Rest of the Package
The AI Evals equity page reports that 200 of 558 comparable paid postings mention equity in their pay text, and only one attaches a quantified figure (AI Evals Equity). The site cautions that a missing mention is not evidence of no equity (AI Evals Equity).
The median midpoint is $300k where equity is mentioned and $270k where it is not (AI Evals Equity). The site says this does not establish a cash-versus-equity trade-off, because employer and seniority mix can explain the gap (AI Evals Equity). One example, “$225K – $400K · Offers Equity,” confirms that a grant exists but gives no size (AI Evals Equity). Cohere (15 bands), Mercor (13), AfterQuery (9) and Decagon (5) state equity on every band they publish (AI Evals Equity).
For scale, Levels.fyi lists Anthropic software-engineer total compensation with a median of $883K in the United States and a Senior Software Engineer total of $621K, made up of $316K base and $305K stock (Levels.fyi, last updated September 24, 2026). These are software-engineer roles at a frontier lab, not eval roles, so this guide does not use them as eval-engineer pay. These sources contain no bonus data for eval roles, so this guide cannot size bonuses.
Skills That Show Up in These Postings
HireVane lists Python, statistical reasoning (significance and sample size), prompt engineering basics and eval frameworks as core skills. Nice-to-have items include annotation tools such as Labelbox, Scale AI and Argilla, CI/CD integration, LLM-as-judge experience and domain or regulatory expertise (HireVane). The guide asserts that domain expertise carries pay premiums. That is the author’s claim, and these sources do not verify it.
LinkedIn’s Skills on the Rise 2026 release, published February 24, 2026, names Prompt Engineering, Large Language Models and AI Business Strategy among its AI skills (LinkedIn). It does not name evaluation, evals or AI evaluation. It therefore cannot serve as a demand signal for eval engineering.
The AI Dev Board jobs report also leaves “evals” out of its top skill tags, which lead with agents, LLM, cloud and payments (AI Dev Board Jobs Report). Demand data is not pay data. Randstad’s Workmonitor 2026 covers 27,000+ workers and 1,225 employers, but it measures vacancy growth rather than pay, and it does not mention eval engineers (Randstad).
FAQ
What is the median advertised band for AI evaluation engineers in 2026?
Across 558 postings, the median advertised band runs from $220,000 to $330,000 (AI Evals Salaries 2026).
What can a junior expect?
One author’s 43-posting sample gives $95,000–$130,000 for junior roles (0–2 years) (HireVane). That sample is not a survey of pay.
Is $330,000 a salary?
No. It is the top of an advertised band, computed as the median of two endpoints across 558 postings (AI Evals Salaries 2026). It is not measured earnings.
Do these roles come with equity?
Sometimes mentioned, rarely quantified. 200 of 558 postings mention equity, and only one attaches a figure (AI Evals Equity).
Is “AI evaluation engineer” a standardized title?
No. HireVane says the role has no standardized leveling yet (HireVane).
The Bottom Line
Advertised bands run a median of $220,000–$330,000 across 558 postings that publish pay, and that view skews high by its own account. One author’s 43-posting sample runs $95,000–$230,000 across three levels. Neither figure is a survey of what eval engineers are paid, so compare any offer against bands for its level and employer (AI Evals Salaries 2026; HireVane).
